The 11th edition of the Beer Mile World Classic did not disappoint, with the men's beer mile world record and the women's beer mile championship record both falling, along with a whopping nine national records.

Men's Championship: Corey Bellemore lowers his beer mile world record to 4:27

After coming up short of his world record in 2023 (4:30 in one shoe in Chicago) and 2024 (4:30 in Windsor), Corey Bellemore returned and got his redemption winning the world title in a new world record of 4:27.1. This was his 7th world title (5th consecutive title) and lowered his previous world record of 4:28.1 set in Manchester, England at the 2021 Beer Mile World Classic.

Bellemore has transitioned to triathlon training, so his speed was in question coming into this year's event. But as always, Bellemore delivered in front of the Lisbon crowd and showed why he's the GOAT.

He also led Team Canada to the team title for the first time since the inaugural World Classic in 2015, taking down the American men who have won the past two world titles and have won 8 of the 11 World Classic titles since the event's inception. Maxime Lapierre (4th, 4:56) and Jeff Mountjoy (13th, 5:32) were Canada's other two scorers. Mountjoy sealed their victory from the 3rd heat, soloing a 5:32.

The US men took second, led by Chris Robertson (5th, 5:00), Joe Kehoe (8th, 5:07), and Hayden Bunnell (9th, 5:07) who dropped his bottle opener mid race and potentially cost the US men their chance at the crown. Rounding out the podium was Team Sweden with a strong 2-3 punch from Emil Granqvist (4:51, NR) and Markus Liwing (4:55) along with Emil Kalered (34th).

In addition to Bellemore's new world record, five other men set their country's national record in this race: Emil Granqvist (4:51, Sweden), Tom Van Cappellen (5:05, Belgium), Pascal Schneider (5:22, Switzerland), Fritz Biniok (5:22, Germany), Louis Thomas (6:01, France).

Women's Championship: Elizabeth Laseter sets a new beer mile championship record

Elizabeth Laseter, USA, delivered once again by winning her 3rd straight title in a new championship record of 5:56, breaking her previous 6:03 championship record from 2023 in Chicago. After a blistering pace set by teammate, Melanie Pozdol, Laseter's running ability let her take the lead just before halfway and pull away with the title.

German Beer Mile Team members Katja Tegler and Anna Kamp stayed patient, letting Pozdol and Laseter gap them early. Ultimately, Tegler and Kamp showed their running strength and passed Pozdol in the last lap to round out the podium in 6:07 and 6:14, both breaking the European record and becoming #3 and #4 on the all time women's list. Melanie Pozdol took 4th in 6:18 to just miss her personal best by one second and give the Americans the team title on a total aggregate time tiebreaker over the Germans.

Master's beer mile world record holder and multi-time world champ, Allison Grace Morgan, finished in 6:38 but ended up disqualified for excessive leftover beer. Anna Bearss, USA, claimed 5th in 6:46, followed by Frida Hellstadius of Sweden in 6th (7:29) and Klara Zackova setting a new Czech national record of 8:03 to take 7th.

Lisbon, Portugal – Embrace yourself for a spectacle unlike any other! The 11th edition of the Beer Mile World Classic is on tap for Saturday, July 26th at the União Atlético Povoense fútbol club facility in Lisbon, Portugal.

This isn't just a race; it's a clash of titans, a test of endurance, and a celebration of pure, unadulterated madness.

The event marks the first international beer mile on the Iberian Peninsula, a significant milestone just one year after the first-ever Portuguese athlete to compete at an international competition, Pedro Gaspar, placed 10th overall in the 10th annual Beer Mile World Championships.  Now, fueled by his home crowd, Gaspar aims to rewrite Portugal’s record book.

This meet, the Official World Championship of the Beer Mile, will be hosted by the production team at Beer Mile Lisboa and the Portuguese Beer Mile Team. In addition to championship heats, Beer Mile Lisboa will host open races on the same day for local participants.

Men's Championship Race Preview

The retirement of Corey Bellemore has been greatly exaggerated. Bellemore hinted at retirement after last year’s near-world record performance on his home track in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. After a speech to the crowd stating that he was likely stepping away, the siren call of the World Classic has lured him to Lisbon, hungry for his seventh title.

But is he still the unstoppable force? Or has his time away created a chink in his armor?

Bellemore will be joined in the men's field by the #2 all-time performer and US Record Holder Chris Robertson, England’s Chris Russell, and a slew of athletes with the talent to break 5-minutes for the beer mile.

World Classic co-founder John Markell says, “We’re excited that Corey will be racing. He is an electric athlete and has a chance to set a new world record whenever he steps on the track with four beers. I am looking forward to seeing if he can outpace the strongest beer mile field ever assembled, or if this year a new competitor claims the title of the 'World’s Fastest Beer Miler'.”

The men’s team race is a powder keg ready to explode. Team USA, with their sub-5:00 army (Chris Robertson, Garrett Cullen, Andrew Benkovsky, Bud Lightning), are the favorites.

But remember the 2022 World Classic in Leuven? The UK squad (Joe Gebbie, Richie Gardner, Brogan McCawley, Chris Russell) proved anything can happen. Sweden, Belgium, and a potentially explosive Portuguese team are all ready to shock the world.

Women's Championship Race Preview

What should viewers expect in the women's race? A fierce American showdown!

In both the team and individual races, the United States is favored once again. They have four active beer milers with personal bests under 6:35, and this year's championship will likely be a battle of The Yanks going head to head for the world title.

The favorite heading into this year's championship is two-time champion Elizabeth Laseter, who won last year's championship after setting the Championship Record of 6:03.7 in Chicago in 2023. She will be joined by fellow Americans and past Champions, Allison Grace Morgan, Melanie Pozdol and consistent podium finisher Kassandra Marin.

One notable competitor will not be attending Lisbon. It is confirmed that World Record Holder Shelby Houlihan (5:43) will not compete and will focus on professional track and field races this summer.

The Germans pose the biggest threat to US women’s dominance. Anna Kamp set the European record (6:31) in last year’s championship, and teammate Katja Tegler was on the podium in her previous World Classic venture in 2023. Tegler posted a breakthrough 6:28 beer mile in 2024 at a local event in Germany, but without sufficient evidence it could not be solidified as the new European Record.

In the fight for a team podium finish, English duo Polly Keen and Laura Riches have both appeared on the World Classic podium. The Swedish women are always in the hunt with a consistently improving Stina Barman and Frida Hellastadius.

We've been selected for premiere at the 44th edition of the Paladino D'Oro Sport Film Festival, a film festival in Palermo, Sicily dedicated to films about sport.

The film festival runs from December 10-15, 2024. There's a fantastic lineup of programming from all around the world, and now the beer mile will make its big screen debut to further the growth of its global audience.

The long-building anticipation for the film's premiere will finally be over, and the film is expected to be publicly available on the Beer Mile Media YouTube channel in late December.

The Beer Mile World Classic is the pinnacle of running and drinking, attracting elite athletes and beer enthusiasts from around the globe.

Each year, the World Classic moves to a new city around the world. To celebrate a decade of this iconic event, we brought the action to Windsor, Ontario (Canada) - the hometown of Corey Bellemore, the reigning world champion and world record holder in the beer mile.

On a freshly laid track (literally - the lane lines were not even painted yet) at the University of Windsor, the best beer milers from around the world convened once again to compete for glory and world titles.

Men's Championship

Featuring Beer Mile World Record Holder Corey Bellemore

All eyes were on world record holder Corey Bellemore (Canada) and the locals came out in droves to support their hometown hero.

Corey was expected to dominate the race, but the real question was whether he would get redemption from his one shoe blunder at last year's World Classic to lower his own 4:28 beer mile world record.

This year's race saw a lot of fresh faces competing in their first World Classic alongside some of the veterans of the sport, including two-time world champion and US record holder, Chris Robertson, former US record holder, Garrett Cullen, Scandinavian record holder, Markus Liwing, and Scottish record holder Chris Russell.

Corey took the race out hard and was clear of the field in the first lap. It was him against the clock, with the crowd roaring along the homestretch and chug zone as he poured the nectar of the gods down his gullet.

Corey kept both shoes on this year, but fell just short of his world record finishing in 4:30. Although he fell short of the world record, this is now the 9th straight year where Corey has run 4:34 or faster at every single World Classic he's competed in - a level of consistency and dominance we may never see again in the beer mile.

The race for second was neck and neck between Chris Robertson (USA), Andrew Benkovsky (USA), and Chris Russell (Scotland). Robertson was first off the line after the fourth beer, with Russell and Benkovsky hot on his tail.

Benkovsky unleashed a beastly kick down the homestretch to pass both of the Chris's and claim second in a personal best 4:57. Robertson took third in 4:58, with Russell setting a massive personal best of 5:00 to lower his own Scottish national record.

In the team competition, defending champions Team USA had to rely on fresh talent to retain their world crown against host country Canada. Only Chris Robertson and Garrett Cullen returned from Team USA's 2023 roster.

The new blood delivered, with the US men claiming second (Andrew Benkovsky), third (Chris Robertson), and fifth (Hayden Bunnell) overall to lock up the world title for the 7th time in the 10 years of this event.

Corey Bellemore Ponders Retirement from the Beer Mile

After the race, Corey faced the crowd with a microphone in hand and announced his likely retirement from the beer mile.

After almost of decade of world dominance, Corey has shifted his focus to longer running events, triathlon, and family.

Women's Championship

Featuring Defending World Champions Elizabeth Laseter, Melanie Pozdol and Allison Grace Morgan

All eyes were on three Americans heading into this race: defending champion and championship record holder with a time of 6:03, Elizabeth Laseter, 2022 champion Melanie Pozdol, and  former world record holder and multiple-time world champion Allison Grace Morgan.

Laura Riches (England), the now former European record holder, and Anna Kamp (Germany), the newly minted European record holder, were both wild cards that were also expected to be in the mix.

Laura Riches got out hard the first lap, but after beer two the race quickly turned into a neck and neck battle between Laseter and Pozdol. Pozdol was necking the beers quicker than Laseter, but Laseter regained the lead while running each lap.

Ultimately, Laseter's speed helped her run away from Pozdol on the last lap, finishing in her second-fastest time ever and the third-fastest time ever recorded, 6:06. Pozdol ran a personal best time of 6:17 to take second. Grace Morgan rounded out the podium in third in 6:25.

Germany's Anna Kamp set a new European record of 6:31 in her first ever World Classic appearance.

As a team, the US women won their 6th straight world title and completed the podium sweep yet again. They have now won seven of the ten World Classics.

The 10th edition of the Beer Mile World Classic is locked in for Saturday, August 17th at the University of Windsor Track Stadium in Windsor, Ontario (Canada). The last time the Beer Mile World Classic took place in Canada was 2018 in Vancouver.

The World Classic, which serves as the official world championship for the Beer Mile, will be hosted by Beer Mile World Record Holder Corey Bellemore and the Canadian Beer Mile Team. In addition to championship heats, the meet will allow local participants to run in open heats.

Men's Preview

A world record alert has been set in the men's race. Five-time Beer Mile World Classic Champion Corey Bellemore has used the World Classic stage to set three world records for the beer mile in 2016 (4:33), 2021 (4:28), and 2022 (4:49 with cans).

Bellemore just missed lowering his world record yet again at the 2023 Beer Mile World Classic in Chicago due to running the entire race in one shoe after some jostling off the start line caused it to fall off. He will be looking for redemption and the performance of his lifetime in front of the home crowd.

“Every time Corey comes to the Beer Mile World Classic, the world record is in jeopardy. On his home track, in front friends and family…he could set a generational record," opined Beer Mile World Classic co-founder John Markell.

The men's field also includes #2 all-time performer and two-time world champion Chris Robertson who holds the US Beer Mile Record at 4:37. In the team competition, the US men seek to defend their 2023 title but will face strong competition from England (2022 champions) along with Belgium, Canada, and Sweden all vying for the podium.

Women's Preview

The Women's race looks to be an American fare. The Yanks have three legitimate women who can win. The favorite heading into this year's championship is Elizabeth Laseter, who ran a Championship Record of 6:03.7 in Chicago last July.

The American roster includes two other past champions, Allison Grace Morgan and Melanie Pozdol. England's Laura Riches is a wild card. The European has crossed the line first in past world championships only to be disqualified for overage or reversal violations.

Shelby Houlihan will not be back to compete in the 2024 edition after smashing the women's world record with a 5:43 in a non-championship heat at the 2023 World Classic.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen is known for his competitiveness, racing often, and going full send every time he steps on the track. In the past 72 hours, Jakob pulled off the greatest triple of all time on the track.

On Saturday, Jakob just missed the mile world record in the Bowerman Mile at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League Final. He clocked a time of 3:43.73 (European Record), securing the win and becoming the third fastest miler of all time.

On Sunday, Jakob edged out Yomif Kejelcha in the 3000m in a time of 7:23.63 to claim the 3000m European Record and also land in the third spot on the all-time leaderboard.

On Sunday evening, Jakob hopped on a red eye flight back to Norway from Eugene, Oregon (USA) and commenced his bachelor party (also known as a stag do) activities ahead of his wedding on September 23, 2023.

First up on the docket? A BEER MILE. Nothing screams runner bachelor party like a beer mile.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen 5:22 Beer Mile

There were rumblings this stag do beer mile would be a beer mile world record attempt. It's no shock that the current, fastest miler in the world has the potential to break the record assuming he can chug with the best of 'em.

The field was made up of Jakob's brothers, including speedy brothers Henrik and Filip, and a number of friends.

Jakob easily took the W in 5:22, underwhelming those who thought he would take a run at the beer mile world record but also surprising others that someone who rarely drinks could get the 48oz of beer down without puking.

For context, very few people, even the best beer milers in the world, run as fast for their debuts as Jakob just did. The only person ever to break 5-minutes in their beer mile debut is world record holder, Corey Bellemore, who ran a 4:39 beer mile in his first go. The beer mile requires repetitions to master the chugging technique and acclimate the stomach to the feeling of running with all the liquid and gas.

One of Jakob's friends in attendance shared "...he [Jakob] is pleased with being 2nd fastest Norwegian and 52nd fastest world wide." Jakob's 5:22 will be added to the Norwegian leaderboard once race footage is provided to validate the result.

Jakob has said on multiple occassions his goal is to own the world record in every event from 1500m to marathon. Well, if he wants to achieve that goal he is going to need to add the beer mile to the list.

Corey Bellemore Dominates Men's World Championship with One Shoe

As expected, world record holder Corey Bellemore (Canada) dominated the men's championship race. Bellemore was primed and ready to lower his own 4:28 beer mile world record, but chaos in the first 100 meters of the race caused him to lose a shoe and a British runner to go down.

Despite running the entire race with one shoe, Bellemore missed his world record by just two seconds, finishing in 4:30. He set a blistering pace early, coming through lap one in 60 seconds (beer + lap) and through halfway (2 beers + 2 laps) in 2:06.

Chris Robertson (USA) and Nick Finch (AUS) rounded out the podium. Team USA took the team title with former American record holder Garrett Cullen (5th overall) and Team USA Nordic Skier Finn O'Connell (6th overall) sealing the deal as USA's second and third finishers behind Robertson. Team Great Britian took runner-up and Team Canada took third.

Shelby Houlihan Becomes First Woman to Break the 6-Minute Barrier with a 5:43 Beer Mile

Much like the men's 5-minute beer mile barrier that was once thought impossible a decade ago, the 6-minute barrier for women stood the test of time — until the 2023 Beer Mile World Classic.

Shelby Houlihan crushed the barrier, finishing in 5:43 with a 63-second final 400m with four beers in her stomach, breaking the previous world record mark of 6:16 by 33 seconds. She ran her mile in roughly 4:25, which was quicker than most elite men covered the distance, and consumed her 4 beers in roughly 1:18.

Houlihan is currently 2.5 years into a 4-year suspension from track and field for a failed drug test (throughout the 2.5 years since her ban she has tested clean dozens of times). Because of the ban, and based on input from the other female athletes competing, the Beer Mile World Classic determined Houlihan was not eligible for the Women's Championship Race this year while the event works to develop a formal policy for athletes competing under a track and field suspension.

However, the official beer mile rules have never required athletes to test in order to have their results ratified. For over 25 years, beermile.com has relied on video evidence alone to prove legitimacy of a beer mile result and have it marked as 'Official' in the database. Further, the World Classic and athletes competing agreed to have Houlihan race in a non-championship heat. The beer mile is a community-focused, inclusive sport that does value integrity, but isn't restricted by having some outside governing body dictate process and timelines for bans.

Thus, Houlihan's time was world record eligible as she followed all rules outlined. Houlihan did not violate any rules regarding her ban and got pre-approvals ahead of the event by the required governing bodies.

Elizabeth Laseter Takes Home 2023 Beer Mile World Title and Leads Team USA Sweep

All eyes were on three Americans heading into this race: defending champion Melanie Pozdol, (now former) world record holder Allison Grace Morgan, and Elizabeth Laseter who was first across the line in the 2022 World Classic but was disqualified on a chug zone technicality.

Laura Riches (England) set the pace on the first beer and lap, but Laseter took command of the race on the second beer and never looked back. She ran away from the field, setting a huge personal best of 6:03 and bettering Allison Grace Morgan's 6:16 world record going into the event.

Grace Morgan finished runner-up in a new masters (40+) world record of 6:19. Defending champion and Chicago local Melanie Pozdol rounded out the podium in third and Kassandra Marin (USA) took fourth, making it a clean sweep for Team USA of the top four spots and securing another team world title.

For the first time ever, the  Beer Mile World Classic featured a celebrity race as part of the 9th annual event on July 1, 2023 in Chicago.

The Celebrity NA Beer Mile was presented by Athletic Brewing and featured a star-studded celebrity field, many of whom were trying their hand at a beer mile for the first time. They drank Athletic Lite, Athletic Brewing’s 25-calorie non-alcoholic light brew that contains less than 0.5% ABV.

Elite marathoner and podcast host Ken Rideout led wire-to-wire, cruising a 6:50, less than a week after winning the Gobi March in Mongolia, a 155-mile stage race across the Gobi Desert. US Rugby National Team member Carlin Isles took runner-up in 8:06.

There was a close battle for third on the final lap between Nev Schulman, Cynthia Frelund, and Francis Ellis. In a sprint finish down the home stretch, Ellis barely edged out Schulman to finish third in 9:28. Schulman finished in 9:29, Frelund in 9:36, and Darren Rovell closed out the race with a time of 11:37.

Men's Championship presented by Two Brothers Brewing

As expected, world record holder Corey Bellemore (Canada) dominated the men's championship race. Bellemore was primed and ready to lower his own 4:28 beer mile world record, but chaos in the first 100 meters of the race caused Corey to lose a shoe and a British runner to go down.

Legends & Elites Race presented by Long Run Coffee

The Legends & Elites Race featured several legends of the beer mile along with elite men and beer mile newcomer Shelby Houlihan.

Team USA's Bud Lightning dominated the race, clocking a 5:00 beer mile which was a 17-second personal best and would have placed him 4th overall in the Men's Championship heat

Jim Finlayson (Canada) battled it out with Todd Rose (USA) for the 50+ beer mile world record. Finlayson came out on top, clocking a 5:44, with Rose finishing in 5:54. They are now the top two 50+ beer milers of all time.

Celebrity NA Beer Mile

The 9th edition of the Beer Mile World Classic is on tap Saturday, July 1st, at Chicago's Hope Academy. The meet will be hosted by Chicago-based Beer Mile Media. Chris Robertson and his Beer Mile Podcast host Adam Shurson have added a beer festival, open beer mile heats, and a Celebrity NA Beer Mile heat to this year's program.

The open heats have sold out, but spectator tickets to the event are still available. This year's fields are the most competitive in meet (and world) history with $15,000 prize money on the line. The action will be live-streamed on the Beer Mile Media YouTube channel from 5:30 - 7:30pm CST on July 1.

Championship Action

World record alerts have been set for both the men's and women's races. Four-time World Classic champion Corey Bellemore has used the World Classic to set three world records in 2016, 2021, and 2022 (cans). He lowered the record from 4:47 in 2016 to 4:28 in 2021. The men's field also includes #2 all-time performer and meet host Chris Robertson, #3 all-time performer Lewis Kent, and former runner-up American Garrett Cullen. The Europeans are headlined by Markus Liwing of Sweden. Eleven men have broken 5 minutes all-time; this field includes six of them.

The Women's race looks to be an American fare. The Yanks have at least three legitimate women who can win and set the world record. The favorite heading into this year's championship is Elizabeth Laseter. Well clear of the field in the 2022 event, Laseter ran under Allison Grace Morgan's world record (6:16.5) but was disqualified for a chug zone penalty. Three-time champ and world record holder, Allison Grace Morgan, looks to recapture the title after a rough go with cans in Leuven last year; she's happy to have bottles as the vessel of choice. Chicago's own Melanie Pozdol will look to repeat as champion. England's Laura Riches is a wild card. She recently set the European record earlier this year but has been DQ'd or had reversals in multiple past championships.

The Kingston and Queen’s Cup titles for national teams will also be up for grabs. The men's Kingston Cup race is shaping up to be a two-team affair.  The United Kingdom team shocked the World last year; their top two scorers (2022 rookies Joe Gebbie and Ritchie Gardiner) came outside of the faster heat. With the world on alert, the UK Team will have to beat a rejuvenated Team USA on their turf. Team USA is led by World #2 Chris Robertson and is buttressed by the return of Garrett Cullen, the emergence of Nordic skiers Finn O'Connell and Willson Moore, and a debut from sub-4 miler Jake Gillum.

The Women's Queen's Cup will likely be retained by Team USA. Morgan, Pozdol, and Laseter are all legitimate individual champion contenders, and USA #4, Kassandra Marin, has finished 3rd and 2nd in the last two editions of the World Classic. That said, the beer mile is unpredictable. It's not unthinkable that UK's Laura Riches and Polly Keen could lead a spirited challenge for the cup.

Non-Championship Action

The Legends & Elites race will feature scoring members of National Teams, Beer Mile Legends, masters athletes, and a prominent American distance runner. Canadians Jim Finlayson and John Markell headline the Beer Mile Legends section. Markell is the World Classic co-founder and co-wrote the Kingston Rules, the official beer mile rule set since 1993. Finlayson previously held the world recrods for the Beer Mile and Beer Two-Mile.  

Shelby Houlihan will return to action in this non-championship section. This is her first public competition since a 2021 doping ban before the Olympic Track and Field Trials. She is not eligible for the championship race this year as the World Classic works to develop a formal policy for athletes competing under suspension.

Sponsored by Athletic Brewing Company, America’s largest non-alcoholic craft brewery, the NA Celebrity Beer Mile will feature Catfish TV show host Nev Schulman, U.S. National Rugby Team member Carlin Isles, comedian Francis Ellis, sports media personality Darren Rovell, NFL analyst Cynthia Frelund, and world-class marathoner Ken Rideout.
